Shipton Gorge is a peaceful West Dorset village tucked between the countryside and the coast. Surrounded by rolling fields, quiet lanes and walking paths, it's the kind of place where life moves at a gentler pace. For us, it's the perfect balance - somewhere calm to return to after a day exploring, while still being close to beaches, market towns and great places to eat.
The village itself is full of character, with traditional stone cottages, a historic church and the village pub, The New Inn, all within easy walking distance of the cottage. From the front door, you can wander along local footpaths and country lanes, enjoy walks through the Bride Valley, or even head towards the coast on foot.
Hive Beach at Burton Bradstock, around two miles away, is one of our favourite nearby spots. Whether you're looking for a morning walk along the South West Coast Path, a day by the sea or lunch overlooking the beach, it's an easy and rewarding trip. West Bay is also close by, with its bustling harbour, dramatic cliffs and traditional seaside treats.
Bridport, the nearest town, is well worth a visit. Known for its independent shops, cafes, restaurants and regular markets, it has a lively and welcoming atmosphere. It's also a great place to pick up shopping, browse antiques and vintage shops, or simply spend a relaxed afternoon exploring.
One of the things we love most about staying here is how much there is to do within a short drive. From fossil hunting in Charmouth and exploring Lyme Regis, to days on the beach, coastal walks and visits to local gardens and museums, there's something for everyone. Families are particularly well catered for, with children's farms, aquariums, soft play centres and plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures nearby.
Whether you're planning an active holiday or simply looking for somewhere peaceful to slow down and recharge, Shipton Gorge is a wonderful place to experience the best of West Dorset.

Newly refreshed for future stays
1 Rose Cottage has been a much-loved holiday home for many years and we are delighted to be its new owners.
As a family with young children, we were drawn to its peaceful setting in the heart of Shipton Gorge, its sunny terraced garden and the wealth of things to do nearby. Some of our favourite days involve exploring Dorset's beaches, visiting local farm parks and museums, or heading out on countryside walks straight from the doorstep.
Whether you're looking for family adventures or a relaxing break, we hope you'll enjoy the cottage and this special corner of Dorset as much as we do.
